How to detect fake flash / SD memory

There’s an easy way to detect fake flash / SD memory. Download H2testw as detailed below.
It keeps happening to me and I’m getting annoyed. I buy a lot of things on eBay and have very rarely had any problems, but more than half of the flash memory I’ve bought has been fake and I think I’d never buy flash from eBay again because of this. Basically the memory stick or card will appear normal. Sometimes the case will look very convincing (like Kingston or Sandisk etc.) You can copy a couple of files onto the memory fine….. BUT it is not the size it pretends to be. Recently bought a 16GB micoSD card that turned out to be a cheap 2GB card. If your files are randomly getting corrupted, here’s how to check:

  1. Download H2testw here.
  2. Format the memory stick / card so that it has maximum free space and the whole memory can be scanned.
  3. Run H2testw which will tell you how much memory really exists.
    The following is an example of a 16GB card that only has 1.9GB and is fake:

You can see above that only 13.6GB has DATA LOST. Basically they’ve used a cheap, rejected chip and modified the controller to make it look bigger and sell it for more. Rip off.

ASUS EeePad Transformer Handbrake settings

These settings are ideal for use with Handbrake to encode files to play well on the Asus Eee Pad Transformer. Thanks to EPChris over on transformer forums for the profile.

Start with the Regular/Normal Preset
Container: MP4 File
On the Video tab, choose:
Video Codec: H.264
Constant Quality: RF 24 (Lower number is better quality but higher file size, I wouldn’t suggest going lower than 20 in this case)
On the audio tab change the Mixdown to “Stereo”, bitrate 160
On the Advanced Tab:
Maximum B-Frames: 0
Uncheck “CABAC Entropy Coding”
Uncheck “8×8 Transform”
Uncheck “Weighted P-Frames”
After those changes, you can save these by clicking on Presets -> Save Preset and name it something like “Transformer”. These settings work for the Xoom as well.

Just FYI:

A 6-min 720p video with RF 24 was about 92Mb for me and wasn’t bad visually at all, definitely watchable
a 6-min 720p video with RF 22 was about 150Mb for me and was very nice to look at

Black border problem using HMDI overscan / underscan with AMD card

If you are using an AMD (ATI) graphics card and getting a black border or zoomed out effect when connected to your monitor using HDMI, you need to adjust the overscan setting in catalyst control panel. Further more you need to do this for every different refresh rate and resolution to fix the problem in 3d modeslike running games fullscreen.
Open Catalyst, drop down graphics and select ‘Desktop & Displays’. Then right click on the small screen at the bottom and click configure. Enable GPU scaling, then click on the ‘Scaling Options’ tab and set underscan to 0%. Click apply. Don’t close the window.
Now right click on the windows desktop. Select screen resolution and advanced settings. Select monitor and change the refresh rate to all the different rates. For each one, apply, then go back into catalyst and set the underscan setting to 0% again. Repeat for all desired combinations of resolution and refresh rate.
Now the borders should have gone.

Howto set up Sopcast in Ubuntu 10.10 including Chromium sop links

To install sopcast player you need to add the following repository:

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:ferramroberto/sopcast
sudo apt-get update

Then, install sopcast-player as follows:

sudo apt-get install sopcast-player

Finally you will need to set up Chrome (Chromium) to link to sopcast links from websites.
